Leading automobile manufacturer Peugeot began 2008 with positive results, reaffirming its position as one of the world's top car van producers.

In quarter one of this year its sales rose by 2.3 per cent to 11.97 billion pounds.

Furthermore, its overall volume for sales rose by 6.1 per cent during the period, to 876,400 units.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley commented on Peugeot's results via a report in the Business Spectator.

"The first quarter is a clear indication to us that unit volumes, pricing and mix are all running better than expected," the firm told the paper.

Peugeot is one of the oldest automobile manufacturers on the market and can trace its history right back to 1810, although it manufactured its first car (steam powered) in 1889.

Peugeot’s entrance into the van market began in the 1950s when it released the D3A minibus van, which is now a favourite with model automobile collectors.

Peugeot went on to manufacture a stream of vehicles in a similar vein, including the Peugeot D4A and J7.

In 1981 it produced the Peugeot Boxer, which with its 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol or diesel engines was beginning to resemble the modern day van.

Since then, Peugeot has managed to continually find new motoring solutions in the light commercial vehicle market that have kept it relevant and a market leader.

The Peugeot Boxer is one of the brand's leading vans and has been described as the "heavyweight" of the manufacturer's range.

Yahoo! Cars say that it is "rugged, durable and a good mover" and note that its engine line-up is "comprised of hour powerplants".

The van features an interior load space of 15 metres cubed and comes with either a 2.2 litre 120 bhp diesel engine or a 3.0 litre 157 bhp.

Since being introduced in October 20076, around 1,292 Boxers have been sold with consumers impressed by the vehicle's six-speed gearbox and other capabilities.

Furthermore at the Commercial Vehicle Show this year, Peugeot launched a series of new vans, in an ambitious bid to replace its entire range of light commercial vehicles.

Its new Bipper and Partner Origin vans were showcased at the event, boasting a payload range of between 1 and 17 metres cubed, demonstrating there is a van in the Peugeot range to suit all requirements.

Peugeot has stressed the environmentally-friendly credentials of its new vans with all of the new range able to run on a 30 per cent mix of bio-diesel, without any modifications being made by the owner.

Furthermore, all Partner Origin and Bipper vans have low CO2 emissions and are fitted with a Diesel Particulate Emission System.

Available in June, the Partner Origin is the renamed old Peugeot Partner, which was first launched in 1996 and has now been revamped and renamed.

The new van features a 1.6-litre HDi 75 bhp diesel engine and comes with two payload options – 600 kg and 800 kg – and buyers can choose to upgrade with the Plus Pack, which features central locking, electric windows and air conditioning.

Standard models will come with 15-inch steel wheels, electric front windows, ABS and emergency brake assistance and 180-degree opening rear doors.

The Peugeot Bipper starts at a recommended retail price of £7,995 and will also hit the market this June.

Described by the manufacturer as "filling the gap between 207 van and the Partner Origin", the Bipper will be available in standard specification or with the 'S Plus Pack', which will feature extras, such as automatic door locking when the vehicle travels over 12 miles per hour, 14-inch steel wheels and remote locking.

The van will also have two gearbox options, including a manually-controlled LCV gearbox.

Other vans manufactured by Peugeot include the car-derived 207 Van, which Yahoo! Cars describes as perfect for "small businesses such as florists or couriers that need to make deliveries of small items in busy urban areas".

The supermini-based van has a load volume of around 1.1 metres cubed and has the potential to be loaded with up to 450 kg of cargo.

A larger payload option is presented with the Peugeot Expert, which was awarded the International Van of the Year 2008 by a panel of commercial vehicle journalists from around 20 European countries.

This vehicle features either a 2.0-litre or a 1.9 litre HDi engine. It also comes with two different payload options, with a load volume of four cubic metres.

The Peugeot Boxer has been described as the "heavyweight" of the manufacturer's range. Yahoo! Cars say that it is "rugged, durable and a good mover" and note that its engine line-up is "comprised of hour powerplants".
